4. Kandy & The Temple of the Tooth
Sri Lanka's cultural capital is home to the sacred Temple of the Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa), which houses what is believed to be the left canine tooth of the Buddha. Surrounded by a scenic lake and misty hills, Kandy exudes a tranquil spiritual atmosphere. Visit during the evening puja ceremony for the most atmospheric experience. 6. Nilaveli Beach & Pigeon Island
On the sun-drenched east coast, Nilaveli boasts miles of uncrowded powdery white sand and crystal-clear turquoise waters. A short boat ride takes you to Pigeon Island Marine National Park — one of the best snorkelling spots in Sri Lanka with vibrant coral reefs, blacktip reef sharks, and sea turtles. Visit between April and September when the east coast is at its calmest and most beautiful.
7. Anuradhapura Ancient City
Founded in the 4th century BC, Anuradhapura was Sri Lanka's capital for over 1,000 years. Its massive brick stupas — some larger than the Egyptian pyramids — rise above an archaeological park spanning 40 square kilometres. The Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, a sacred fig tree planted in 288 BC from a branch of the original Bodhi tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment, is the oldest historically documented tree in the world.
8. Mirissa — Whale Watching Capital
This laid-back south-coast beach town is the gateway to some of the world's best blue whale and sperm whale watching. From November to April, whale watching excursions depart daily at dawn. Sri Lanka's southern waters are one of very few places where you can see both blue whales and sperm whales on the same trip. The beach itself is a beautiful crescent of golden sand perfect for sunset drinks.
9. Nuwara Eliya — "Little England"
At an altitude of 1,868 metres, Nuwara Eliya is Sri Lanka's highest town and the heart of Ceylon tea country. Colonial-era bungalows, a golf course, and cool misty mornings give it a distinctly British hill-station feel. Visit a working tea factory to learn how world-famous Ceylon tea is made, from leaf plucking to final tasting. The surrounding Gregory Lake and Hakgala Botanical Gardens are perfect for leisurely exploration.
10. Minneriya National Park — The Elephant Gathering
Between July and October, Minneriya hosts one of the greatest wildlife spectacles in Asia — "The Gathering." Up to 300 wild Asian elephants congregate around the receding Minneriya Tank to graze and socialise. Watching herds of elephants with calves playing, bathing, and feeding against a backdrop of distant mountains is a deeply moving experience. It's been called the "largest gathering of Asian elephants on Earth" by wildlife experts.
