Horton Plains National Park & World’s End
Ethereal highland plateau, mossy cloud forests, Baker’s Falls & the dizzying 880m World’s End precipice
About Horton Plains National Park & World’s End
Occupying an isolated windswept plateau at an elevation over 2,100 meters (6,900 ft) in the central highlands, Horton Plains is Sri Lanka’s highest national park and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Featuring a 9.5-kilometer scenic circular loop trail, it takes hikers through stunted moss-draped cloud forests, open montane grasslands, and crystal-clear mountain streams, culminating at the dizzying abyss of World’s End where the plateau drops vertically nearly 1 kilometer into the valley below.
Top Highlights
- World’s End — a breathtaking sheer vertical drop of 880 meters (2,887 ft) over the southern tea plains
- Mini World’s End offering equally dramatic cliff views with fewer crowds
- Baker’s Falls, a thunderous 20-meter cascade surrounded by giant rhododendrons & tree ferns
- Large herds of wild Sambar deer grazing calmly across golden montane grasslands
- Endemic cloud forest birds including the Sri Lanka whistling thrush & yellow-eared bulbul
Traveler Tips
- Enter the park gate by 6:00 AM to 6:30 AM; thick mist and cloud cover typically envelope World's End by 9:30 AM, obscuring the view.
- Strict zero-plastic policy: Single-use polythene bags and plastic wrappers are removed at the gate; bring reusable water flasks.
- Wear sturdy walking shoes and layer your clothing; early mornings are crisp (5°C–10°C) before warming up under the highland sun.
