Wilpattu National Park

Sri Lanka’s largest national park: tranquil wilderness, 106 natural rainwater lakes, leopards & sloth bears

About Wilpattu National Park

Spanning 1,317 square kilometers in northwestern Sri Lanka, Wilpattu is the island’s largest and oldest national park. Renowned for its unique topography of dense dry lowland forest interspersed with over 100 natural sand-rimmed lakes ("villus"), Wilpattu provides an exceptionally tranquil, unhurried safari experience where wildlife tracking feels completely authentic and undisturbed by mass tourism.

🌤️ Best Time to Visit: February to October (Especially May to September when animals gather at natural villus)

Top Highlights

  • Over 106 natural sand-rimmed rainwater basins (villus) creating scenic wildlife amphitheaters
  • Healthy population of Sri Lankan leopards in a peaceful, uncrowded safari atmosphere
  • Premier reserve in Asia to encounter the reclusive Sri Lankan sloth bear feeding on wild Palu fruits
  • Abundant herds of barking deer, spotted deer, wild water buffalo & mugger crocodiles
  • Prolific forest birdlife including painted storks, white-bellied sea eagles & Ceylon junglefowl

Traveler Tips

  • Wilpattu is expansive; full-day or early-morning (6:00 AM) safaris give the highest probability of spotting leopards sunning on villu sands.
  • Bring quality binoculars (8x42 or 10x42) and a 300mm+ telephoto camera lens, as jungle tracks require keen spotting through forest clearings.
  • Wilpattu is easily combined with the sacred ancient capital of Anuradhapura, located just 45 minutes to the east.
