Sri Lanka Visa & ETA Guide 2026 — Complete Application Walkthrough

Gecko Travels Team··6 min read

Planning a trip to Sri Lanka? One of the first steps is obtaining your Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). This comprehensive guide walks you through the entire process, from eligibility checks to the online application and what to expect upon arrival.

What is an ETA?

The ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) is Sri Lanka's electronic visa system that allows short-term visitors to enter the country for tourism, business, or transit purposes. It was introduced to streamline the visa process and can be applied for entirely online — no embassy visit required.

Who Needs an ETA?

Almost all foreign nationals require an ETA to enter Sri Lanka, including citizens of the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Netherlands, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and the United States. A few countries are exempt — check the official website for the latest list. Children must also have their own individual ETA.

How to Apply — Step by Step

Step 1: Visit the official Sri Lanka ETA website (eta.gov.lk). Step 2: Select "Tourist ETA" and fill in your personal details, passport information, and travel dates. Step 3: Pay the fee online using Visa, Mastercard, or American Express. Step 4: Receive your ETA approval via email within 24-48 hours (usually much faster). Step 5: Print a copy and carry it with your passport.

Fees & Validity

The standard tourist ETA costs approximately $50 USD and is valid for 30 days from the date of entry. It allows a double entry, meaning you can leave and re-enter Sri Lanka once during the validity period. Children under 12 may be eligible for free or reduced-fee ETAs — check the latest rates on the official portal.

Extending Your Stay

If you wish to stay longer than 30 days, you can apply for an extension at the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Colombo. Extensions of up to 90 days are possible. Apply at least one week before your current ETA expires. You will need your passport, return flight ticket, proof of sufficient funds, and the extension fee.

Important Tips

Apply at least 72 hours before your departure to avoid any last-minute stress. Ensure your passport is valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended stay. The name on your ETA must exactly match your passport. Keep a digital and printed copy of your approval. If you book with Gecko Travels, we will guide you through the entire ETA process and send you a step-by-step reminder before your trip.
